More Chocolate Vices

Chocolate is sooooo delicious! The way it melts in your mouth, the way it tastes on your tongue, the pure sensation of smooth silky chocolate just makes eating it such a pleasure. Mmmmm chocolate, yummy. We love to eat chocolate, drink it, cook with it, melt it, bathe in it, and scent things with it. Chocolate is everywhere. This is why chocolate is a vice.

Why is Choclate a Vice

It is believed that Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover chocolate. Not the first person. The Aztec Indians were using cocoa beans to make a drink called "chocolatl", meaning "warm liquid. Christopher Columbus brought back the cocoa beans to Spain around 1502 when he discovered them on his fourth voyage. We get all our true chocolate products from these beans today.

But let’s look a bit closer. It must go through a long process before reaching candy stage.

  • First we start with the cocoa beans.
  • Once the beans are harvested they are roasted.
  • The inside piece is called the nib. This "nib" is then ground until it finally becomes a liquid.
  • The chocolate liquor can be separated into cocoa solids and cocoa butter.
The different chocolates are made from different combinations of chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sugar and vanilla and cocoa solids.
  • White chocolate has none of the cocoa solids in it. Because of the lack of cocoa solids in white chocolate many countries do not consider it a chocolate at all.
  • The amount of sugar will make it bitter, sweet, semi sweet.
  • Add milk and you now have milk chocolate.
Which chocolate is your chocolate vice?

We also know that chocolate has lots of chemicals in it that have been proven to be good for us. Some even have been shown to help reduce the possibility of heart attacks. What more reason do you need to eat chocolate now? The theobromine is an alkaloid in cocoa. It stays in the cocoa solids and partly responsible for chocolate's mood-elevating effect. Do not give it to animals. This same mood enhancer in people can kill animals or cause extreme distress. White chocolate has no cocoa solids there fore no theobromine so if for some reason your pet eats your white chocolate is will be ok.

So if we still can't understand why chocolates are a chocolate vice, never mind let's just really enjoy it!
