You can brew great beer at home. To do this you must start with 3 things, good recipe, good equipment and good ingredients. These are essential to making the best beer possible. Other wise what is the point. Don’t get discouraged if the first batch isn’t perfect. It does take a little practice but before long your beer should get better and better.

Just what is beer? Beer is made from four basic ingredients: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are also priming sugar and flavorings to be added. What you do with these ingredients can vary the flavors of you home brewed beer.
| These are the basics for the three types of beer you can make, ales, lagers, and specialty beers. Ale uses top fermenting yeast and undergoes short, warm fermentations. Ales are intended to be consumed soon after completion. Ales are also usually higher in alcohol content. Lagers use bottom fermenting yeasts and require cool temperatures. |

They take a bit longer to brew. The result is a very clean, sparkling beer. Lagers are best served at slightly cooler temperatures than ales. Specialty beers are either ales, lagers, or a hybrid of the two that contain ingredients that keep it from being a true ale or lager.

Now let’s look at what you need for home brewed beer. It will probably cost about $100.00 for start up equipment. Your ingredients to brew each batch will cost about $35-50, depending on what you buy and where you buy it. The home brewed beer kits now make it so easy. They can run anywhere from $30 and up and once you make an initial investment your refills are less expensive. |
| You can always buy the small, inexpensive home brewing kits that promise to make beer easily in less than two weeks. You may be able to brew something in two weeks. It may not be as good as a batch that takes longer but with good ingredients it should be tasty. It will probably be good enough for you to want to try more and in time get into the more involved beer brewing. A good batch of beer takes just over one month to make, from the day you brew it to the day it’s ready to drink. During that you are waiting for the beer to ferment, age and carbonate. |
